Investigate
Runbooks
Runbooks are written operational guidance for the systems you run, kept in Thai and English. The copilot and the investigator can read them and cite a passage, with its version, in an answer.
How it works#
A runbook is a document for one system, such as the payment provider behind payments-gw or the integration layer around order-api. Each system has a Thai and an English version. When a question concerns a system, MonitOps selects passages for that system in the language of the question, and the answer follows the language of the person asking.
Passages and citations#
A document is divided into passages by its headings, and each passage has an identifier. When an answer uses a runbook, it cites the document, its revision and the passage. The revision is derived from the document's content, so a changed runbook has a new revision and a citation says which one it relied on. The reference is assigned by MonitOps, never taken from model output.
Opening a citation shows the passage. Like every other citation, opening it is authorized again at the time of the request.
What a runbook can and cannot establish#
Runbook passages are prepared guidance. They explain what to check and what is known about a system, and they are labelled as such. They cannot show that a service is healthy now: that needs live evidence from signals, checks and logs.
Investigation with runbooks is read-only. A runbook can name a recovery action, but an action runs only through the catalogue and the approval workflow described in Actions and approvals.
Configuration#
Runbooks are Markdown documents supplied to a deployment as configuration data. A deployment declares which documents it uses, and a document that is not declared is not read. Reads are by system and language, not by path.
What you see in the console#
The copilot panel and incident detail show runbook passages as citations beside the answer, next to citations to logs, signals and incidents. A Thai question about a provider outage, for example, can be answered in Thai from the Thai runbook with the passage cited. In INC-20931, a recommended action cites the runbook RB-PAY-004 as the reason it applies.
Limits and defaults#
- Runbook retrieval is by system and language, with a bounded number of passages per question.
- No runbook content is read from a location a user supplies.
Failure states#
- If no passage applies, the copilot says it found no guidance and does not invent a procedure.
