Administer
Configuration management
Configuration management covers how administrators change MonitOps itself: sources, destinations, alarm definitions and dashboards. A change is validated before it is applied, earlier versions can be restored, and every administrative change is recorded.
How it works#
Validate before apply#
A change is validated before it is applied. If it is invalid, the result lists an error for each object that failed.
Dry run for alarm definitions#
An alarm definition can be tried in a dry run before it is applied (see Alarm definitions).
Versions and restore#
Sources, destinations and dashboards keep versions or snapshots. A restore action returns an object to an earlier version. Alarm definitions are already versioned on every change: each evaluation records the version that produced it, and deleting a definition is a soft delete that keeps history readable.
Audit of administrative changes#
Every object an administrator can change produces an audit event with the values before and after the change and the source address. The audit view can be exported, and the audit trail has a retention period.
This sits next to the audit of queries, recommendations, approvals and actions described in Roles and access.
Procedure#
To change an alarm definition safely:
- Edit the definition in the console.
- Run the dry run and review the result.
- Fix any per-object errors reported by validation.
- Apply the change. A new version is recorded.
- If the result is not what you intended, restore the earlier version.
What you see in the console#
Validation errors appear against the object that caused them. The audit view lists administrative changes with who made them, when, and the before and after values.
Limits and defaults#
- Only administrators change sources, destinations, alarm definitions and dashboards (see Roles and access).
- Configuration here means MonitOps's own settings, not the infrastructure it runs on.
- Audit retention is set as a retention period.
Failure states#
| State | What happens |
|---|---|
| Invalid change | Validation fails and lists the errors per object |
| Unwanted change applied | Restore the earlier version |
